Abstract:
In April 2026, the polar vortex in the Northern Hemisphere was distributed in an eccentric pattern and the Ural blocking high developed abnormally. The path of cold air affecting East Asia was by north, and the cold air was relatively weak. The national average temperature was 1.4 ℃ higher than the climatological average, ranking the fourth highest since 1961. The national average precipitation was 27% above the normal, and the rainfall over regions south of the Yangtze River was extraordinarily abundant. Especially, the monthly precipitation in Hunan Province broke the historical monthly record. Multiple types of disastrous weather with prominent extremities occurred this month. On 9 April, a large-scale hail event occurred in the Jiangnan Region (area south of the Yangtze River), and extreme thunderstorm gales affected central and northern Zhejiang Province with record-breaking non-typhoon high winds observed over the Zhoushan sea area. From 26 to 27 April, during the torrential rain event in southern Guangxi, the daily rainfall at 14 stations including Qinzhou Station broke the historical daily rainfall records in April. Four sand-dust events including one severe sandstorm, and six severe convective weather events occurred across China this month. A large-scale heavy sandstorm occurred in northern China from 17 to 20 April. Affected by the Mongolian cyclone, this sandstorm event featured the west-strong and east-weak pattern and dual-channel transport. Overall, during this month, the records of daily precipitation, wind speed and temperature in spring were broken in many places, and these disasters exerted various impacts on production, daily life and ecological environment.
